Planning a Disneyland Vacation
What to know before you book, and where a vacation specialist makes a real difference.
Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California is where it all started. Two theme parks, three on-property hotels, and the Downtown Disney district, all packed into a footprint you can walk end to end in about fifteen minutes. That compactness changes how you plan. People who show up with a Walt Disney World playbook usually plan the wrong trip.
Here's what actually matters.
Two parks, one esplanade
Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure sit directly across from each other. Park hopping here is a short walk, not a bus ride, which makes hopper tickets far more useful than they are in Florida. It also means a well-planned day can cover ground in both parks without losing hours in transit.
How long should you stay?
Three to four park days covers both parks well for a first visit, and many families pair Disneyland with a broader Southern California trip. If you're flying in just for Disney, staying an extra day beats rushing. The original Disneyland Park alone holds more attractions than any single park in Florida.
Reservations and Lightning Lane
Theme park reservations are still required at Disneyland, and popular dates fill up. Lightning Lane is its own system with its own strategy. As of January 2026, guests staying at the three hotels of the Disneyland Resort also get a one-time Lightning Lane entry included with their stay: one eligible attraction, on one day of the visit. It's a nice perk rather than a game-changer, and a specialist can tell you how much weight it deserves for your specific dates.
Where should you stay?
The three Disney hotels put you steps from the gates at a premium. The Grand Californian even has its own entrance into California Adventure. But Anaheim also has dozens of Good Neighbor hotels within walking distance at a fraction of the price, and for some trips that tradeoff is the right call. Which side of that line your trip lands on is exactly the kind of question a specialist answers quickly.
The honest answer: get a specialist.
A vacation planner who knows Disneyland can time your tickets, watch for hotel offers after you book, and build park days that match how your group actually travels. It costs you nothing, and they've walked these parks themselves.
